Selecting the Right Rose

March 10, 2008

When it comes to roses, there are a few things you will need to consider before planting them. All roses are certainly not created equal and if you want to get years of enjoyment out of your garden, you will need to follow a few steps.

First, make sure that the roses you are purchasing are rated for your area. Never assume that because a local store is selling them that they will live through one of your winters. It may be better to purchase your roses from a company that specializes in providing them nationally. These places usually offer a guarantee, so that if your rose doesn’t make it through the winter you can get a free replacement. Pay special attention to the zones on your rose plants before you go to the trouble of planting them. When in doubt, go with a cold season rose that will not be affected by bad weather.

As more roses are created, the scents now range quite widely. Instead of the old common rose smell, you can now find roses with a citrus or cinnamon scent. There are hundreds of different varieties that offer many different scents. Typically, if a rose is orange in color, you can expect the scent to be more citrus-like. Dark red roses usually have that wonderful old fashioned rose scent, while pink roses may have a softer fragrance. There are also many new colors from which to choose now. You can find blue, purple or even red roses that are so dark they are almost black. New variations pop up every year and it’s always fun to try a new one to see what it can do for your garden. Roses are beautiful and they are definitely meant to be enjoyed. Try to plant at least one rose bush in your garden to see what it can do for you.
