Picking the Right Garden Tools

March 6, 2008

When you decide to have a garden, you will need to make sure that you have the right tools to take care of it properly. There are many different types of tools on the market and it can be overwhelming to decide which ones you really need.

The most basic tools that you will require are a hoe, small shovel and a rake. This should help you take care of the most basic tasks such as weeding, digging and regular maintenance. If you have an area where you will need to break up the soil, you may need to purchase a tiller. However, if it is a one time only event, you may be better off simply renting one from a local hardware store, or have someone come in to do it for you.

Soil aerators are also important for a healthy garden. Choose a model that is easy to use and doesn’t require a lot of heavy lifting on your part. If you have trouble with repetitive tasks, look for a model that is gas or electric powered. Next up is the perennial favorite – the weed whacker. The best models are those that are cordless since you’ll have more freedom and you won’t need to buy any gas to keep it running. However, these can be a little heavy at times, depending on the model. When you go to buy a weed whacker, carry it around the store for a few minutes. If it is too heavy after two minutes, go with a lighter model.

While there are hundreds of gadgets out there, you really only need a few to get the job done right. One of the most important tools is one that just sits there. Look for a good gardening mat that will cushion your knees as you garden, making it more comfortable to take care of all the necessary tasks.
