The Best Evergreen Plants

March 11, 2008

Evergreen plants are the favorite of many gardeners. They provide good even color all year round and can really help it feel like spring, even in the depths of winter. If you are looking to add a little life to your garden, these plants can really make a difference. Many people prefer to use evergreen plants in areas where they can use a little concealment. If you have a particularly ugly area in your yard that you would like to cover up, consider using evergreen plants to hide it.

One of the most popular evergreen plants is actually a shrub. Broadleaf shrubs can provide you with color throughout the year as well as privacy. These will require a little extra care, but they look very nice and give your yard a truly polished look. There are many different types of broadleaf shrubs but the most popular are usually the holly bush or the azalea. Before you plant one of these however, make sure that they are not going to endanger any neighborhood pets, as some evergreen bushes may be poisonous to animals.

For regular plants, the most popular evergreen varieties include the spreading varieties which give you a lot of ground cover. These are very good to use in drainage areas or in spots where nothing else will grow in your yard. You’ll have the added benefit of camouflaging an eyesore while you enjoy the color all year round. These are also useful varieties if you have a slope that needs some color or areas around your walkway that need to be filled in. The different varieties of Sedge are commonly used for this purpose.  Creeping Red Sedum is also used and has the benefit of providing a nice red color in the summer with a rich green in the winter.
