Setting Up a Play Area in Your Backyard

August 5, 2008

Whether you’re a kid or a parent, outdoor play areas can be enjoyed by all ages. Being in the sun and engaging in “play time” has its benefits, especially where a person’s health is concerned. And the benefits can be had by all age groups. With computers being so popular today (even to the extent of controlling our lives), outdoor play and recreation has become increasingly more important than ever. The concept of outdoor play has been lost to the computer or Wii. So here are some helpful ideas on how to put some play back into your lives.

For children from about age 2 up through seniors, outdoor chalk and an outdoor ball can work wonders. Naturally, hopscotch comes to mind where the chalk is concerned. However, there are pictures that can grace that large canvas commonly referred to as a driveway or sidewalk. The outdoor ball can be used for playing catch or for dodgeball.

For the older children, usually in the six and up age group, the balls and a jumprope can keep them happily occupied for hours. Anything that benefits the cardiovascular system is always a benefit, but the aspect of constant movement also provides the benefit of stronger muscles and muscle tone. The balls can be used to play catch or dodgeball.

For the pre-teen to teenager age group, bikes and basketballs can provide all the entertainment and exercise necessary. The bikes serve a dual purpose in that they can be ridden to friends’ houses as well as racing and performing tricks on. Basketball is pretty much enjoyed by everyone at some point in their lives or another. It’s a great game and it usually equates to a handful of people having a great time playing it. The game also encourages a lot of jumping and running.
