Gardening Tips for the Arrival of August and Your Freezing Berries
Growing poppies is not a very easy task and that is quite a known fact to all of you who have a love for gardening and flowers. Planting fall vegetables, rejuvenating the blossom of annual flowers and freezing berries are some of the tips you need right at this period of the year.
So do you know how can you see your poppies flowering at this time of the year without a sure fail. Poppies are resentful and generally succumb to transplanting. So a possible way of growing Oriental Poppies is by root cuttings. Once the plants dry up just dig up the roots. Then cut the roots into smaller pieces and plant them. The good news is that by summer you will see them sprouting and by next year they will grow up as full flowering plants.
Now the veggies, there is till sometime left for planting fall vegetables like beans, broccoli, carrots and beets, Chinese cabbage and lettuce. You need to plant the lettuce in the shade of tomatoes or create a shade for them since they need to be kept cold. If your potential harvest is looking peek then you can help them with a dose of fertilizer and a round of trimming. That way you will be happy to see them bounce back.
Also give the container pansies and lobelia some shade in the afternoon, it will help. Stop pruning the trees and shrubs as any pruning done after July will stimulate new growth that might not have enough time to harden off before the cold weather arrives. This can result in winter injury to the plant. The same goes for the application of fertilizer, don’t apply any to the trees and shrubs after July, but you can continue fertilizing the annual and perennial flowers.
Now the next is about removing the plants, remove spent plants from your garden beds; sow a cover crop, such as winter rye. This will help reduce the infestation of weeds; it will also minimize the erosion and compaction from fall rains, and will add nutrients and organic matter to the soil when it is tilled under next spring. If you're making a new bed build the soil with a cover crop for a year before planting and also till it before it goes to seed.
