Gardening Trends for 2008

This year, it is all about extremes. From purple carrots to vibrant new roses, color is taking center stage. Last year, the trend was a more pastel garden, but this year, anything vibrant is what is really hot. Posies in particular are moving to the front of the pack with their cheery hues and whimsical appearance. Other recommended plants are the new Ruby Ruby rose in a dark crimson hue, as well as Pampas grass in shades of purple.

Raised beds are also very popular this year. As outdoor space becomes premium, many gardeners are figuring out how to do more with less room. These raised beds have several bonuses for a gardener, the most obvious being that it is easier on your back. Try to find a raised bed with several levels for a terraced effect. Whether you have a patio garden or a lot of space, raised beds can really make your garden stand out.

Fully grown plants and trees are expected to be hot sellers this year as well. More people are becoming impatient with the process of waiting for trees to bloom over several years. Nurseries are reporting that they are nearly sold out of fully grown trees and shrubs, and seedling sales are at a high as well. In an unexpected twist, several large condominium complexes in large cities will begin installing a new kind of fake grass that looks realistic but never needs to be mowed.

Unusual plants, flowers and trees are also very popular this year. If you aren’t sure about adding a strange new variety to your garden, just get one and make it your center piece. A flowering tree will look right at home in the center of a beautiful flower garden, or a bright plant can look great in a pot by your front door.
