Measures Needed to be Taken for the Survival of Lawn in Drought
Water problem is quiet common in summers in urban areas. The reasons could be overcrowding of cities or might be shortage of rainfall. This water scarcity in turn hampers your beautiful lawn. Most of the times it fails to survive in drought like conditions. But by undertaking some simple measures one can make their lawns flourish in these harsh conditions.
The measures that one should take before the drought are as follows:
If you know or are expecting a drought, some 45-50 days before that you should try to prepare your lawns to face this adversity. This has to be done not only for drought but for summers too. The basic idea in preparing the lawn is making it healthy to withstand the dry period.
- First of all you should minimize the thatch and compaction.
- One should water the lawn either early in the morning or late at night.
- Water the plants as many times as possible.
- Mow often so that you never remove anything more than the top third of grass blade.
- Use of herbicides and pesticides should be avoided during this time period.
Measures to be undertaken during the drought period-
- The mowing height should be raised more than 25% or so.
- The areas near heat reflecting surfaces like near the walls and sloped or high surfaces. Such parts of the lawn should be given more water than other parts of the lawn.
Measures to be taken if the drought period extends-
- Stop the use of lawn.
- Water only those areas which you think are the most important part of your lawn.
- Be patient and wait till the conditions get better and don't worry if some part of the lawn is already spoiled it will get better later on.
