Everyone wants a nice yard with a spectacular garden yet the majority of the people who have this type of home landscape are those who have gardeners who do it for them.  Many of us do not have that type of money to pay thousands of dollars to not only construct our outdoor paradise but to also maintain it.  However, if you are looking for a new hobby and have some time on your hands you may try out gardening.  With the right tools and just a few hours a week you can have that spectacular garden at a fraction of the price.

There are some key tools when it comes to maintaining your garden.  Such tools include a lawnmower, leaf blowers and lawn blowers, cultivators, garden trimmers and a spading fork.  If you are new to maintaining your lawn then you should get very up close and personal with these tools because they will be your best friends when it comes to gardening and maintaining that Steppford Lawn.

Your lawnmower will be in charge of maintaining the length of your grass.  The last thing you want is foot high grass growing uncontrollably.  You can cut it about every week.  There are three main types of lawnmowers, manual lawnmowers, electrical lawnmowers and gasoline run lawn mowers.  Before you can plant your garden, you need to make sure that it is cultivated.  Many times the soil is compact and hard.  With the help of the cultivator you won’t have these problems.

Leaf blowers are great to have because they clear all of the fall leaves off of the ground.  This is ideal because before winter starts these leaves can actually harm your lawn for next season.  Use your leaf blowers to relieve yourself from starting next year’s gardening season with problems.  Trimmers are great for fine touches when it comes to your shrubs and bushes.  A spading fork is also handy as is helps to dig with more ease than an average shovel.  You will be able to separate plants, lift plants and turn the soil after cultivating it.

You should care for your trees year round.  Many people get to take the winters off from gardening flowers, yet you should really keep up with your trees year round in order to give them the much care that they need.  Some people do not realize the grand importance of a tree in one’s garden.  If you have a beautiful garden but your trees are not maintained then it takes away from your garden’s attraction.  Here are some key tips on caring for your trees so that they stay healthy all year round.

Water is essential to life.  Therefore, make sure your trees always have water.  You want them to have water all year round and especially in those hot and dry summer months.  Contrary to popular belief, sprinklers give only enough water to grass but not to trees, therefore you should let the water from a hose soak into the grounds by the roots of the tree or trees.  You will be feeding it directly so there is no question as to whether it received the water or not.  Smaller tress should have at least five minutes of watering while most average to large trees need at least 45 minutes to an hour of watering.  This should be done at least one a week and twice in really dry weather.

Next comes fertilization.  You should have a balanced PH level in your tree soil and you should make sure that the roots are absorbing as much nutrients as possible.  Finally you should also be on the lookout for insect and fungi.  This is called tree damage control.  The sooner you spot the problem the better it is for your tree because you  can take care  of it.

Full of Love Rose Gardens

October 1, 2008

If you want to show your love then you should incorporate a rose garden bed into your garden.  Whether it is small and intimate or large and inviting, your garden should definitely show off some of the most beautiful flowers; roses.  However, as a gardener you should be aware that not every rose is treated equally.  They may be equally as beautiful but in terms of caring for them and how and where they grow may vary greatly.

The first thing to do is to find roses that are especially prone to your area.  If you buy roses that are more comfortable with growing in a warmer area then where you live, then the chances are that you will have a rose plant that will not even survive your winter.  Therefore when it comes to roses look for locally grown roses or at least regionally grown roses that have not been imported into the area.  Then you should look for the ideal growing spot in your garden to grow them.  IF that part of your garden blends into the rest but you want to highlight your roses you can use a rock garden or lights in order to highlight the roses.

Now that roses come in a wide variety of hues you can pick just about any color to fit your garden.  Such rose color gardens can include: pink roses, white roses, red roses, yellow roses, orange roses, blue roses, purple roses and even mixed colored hybrid roses.  The best part about these is that after your rose garden has bloomed and prospered for a few years you will begin to smell their rose aromas which are not all of the same.  The pink and red roses have similar aromas yet the pink’s is much more subtle while the orange and yellow roses have a more citrus smell to them.
