How to fix a pothole
Potholes, no matter where they are, are a pain, but they don't have to be expensive to fix. You can fix a pothole in your own driveway very easily.
a. Use a rake or a shovel to remove any loose debris or stones from the pothole.
b. Inspect the pothole. If you notice that the pothole sides are loose, use a shovel to cut them down straight. This will make the edges of the hole firm.
c. Use loose gravel to fill the hole but don't fill it to the top. Stop at three inches before the driveway level.
d. Buy a tamping tool or make your own with a square three quarter inch plywood on the end of a four foot long 2×4. Use it to tamp the gravel down.
e. If you have a driveway made of dirt, fill the hole with soil until there's a mound a few inches higher than the surface.
f. Pour water over the soil and tamp it down.
g. If you feel you need more soil, add more and then tamp it down again.
h. If you have a gravel driveway, use matching for your driveway to fill in the final three inches. Make a mound of it just a bit over the surface of the driveway.
I. Use a rake and rake the excess gravel so that it blends in with the rest of your driveway.
j. Finally, run over the spot several times with one of your car wheels to pack the gravel or the dirt down.
