Building Your Own Terrace

Adding a terrace to your garden can really give it a finished touch and add to the overall curb appeal to your house. For gardens with a limited amount of space, terraces can be used to increase the amount of flowers or plants.

If you decide to build a terrace to simply add appeal, it is very easy. If you already have a hill to work with, you won’t need to bring in any extra dirt. You can carve out the terraces one by one, gradually increasing their size until you get to the bottom. Once you have the spaces carved out, you can add a border with a little fence on each level to give it some extra visual appeal. Once each layer is complete you can begin adding your plants. Use the shortest plants on the layer nearest to the ground and plant tall ornamental grasses at the top for a dramatic look.

If you need to make your own terrace, you will need to have dirt trucked in. Start with the bottom layer first, packing down the dirt well so that the next level will have a strong foundation. Continue until you reach the top. Again, you can add a border fence on each level if would like. For this type of terrace, you will need to make sure that the plants do not require a lot of root space. Unlike the hill plan, your man made terrace will have some places where plants can overlap. Select the flowers and plants that have shorter root systems for the best results.

Food plants like strawberries do very well on a terrace planting. They don’t require a lot of space and you can really increase your yields when you plant in this fashion.
